An Independent Review of Modernising Medical Careers led by Professor Sir John Tooke, DM, FRCP, FMedSci
The former Secretary of State for Health, Patricia Hewitt, invited me to lead an Independent Inquiry into Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) in the wake of the debacle surrounding MTAS, the process used for selecting trainee doctors for specialist training. Seldom in my professional career has an issue provoked such an outcry from the profession and expressions of concern for the future of trainee doctors and the delivery of medical care and health service developments to which we hope they will contribute.
I hope the Panel has demonstrated over the last five months that it has been entirely transparent in the execution of the Inquiry and that the findings published on 8 October will be well received.
We need to hear your views on our Recommendations and so I should like to encourage you to complete the new e-consultation found on this site.
I look forward to reading your views and very much welcome your input into this process which I see as critically important for the future of postgraduate medical education in the UK and thus for our future health and wealth.
Professor Sir John Tooke DM, FRCP, F MedSci

Trainee Workshops
More than 200 doctors attended workshops with Sir John in London and in Cambridge last week. Key themes to emerge included: F2 is too early to decide on which specialty in which to train; the need to enhance (non-training) roles and the preference for flexibility over run through.
Delegates also commented on the high security of the password to enter the questionnaire site - but do please persevere - we need to hear from you.

Panel Independence
Mindful of the need for the Inquiry's complete independence, John Tooke has decided to stand down as Chair of the Medical Schools Council until the Panel's draft report has been finalised. The Council's Deputy Chair, Professor Tony Weetman, has taken over as Acting Chair with immediate effect.
